Servings
The Table below shows the servings for all the different sizes of wedding cakes. The number of servings obtained from a wedding cake depends on the size of serving you are looking to serve. We have split the servings into three types, a small serving, medium serving and a large serving. A Large serving is equivalent to a dessert serving and a small serving is equivalent to a small cake bar.
Cake Type | Size | Small serving Square Round | Medium Serving Square Round | Large Serving Square Round | 3 tier Medium | 6, 8 10inch | 200 | 170 | 100 | 85 | 50 | 42 | 3 tier Large | 8, 10, 12inch | 300 | 255 | 150 | 125 | 75 | 62 | 4 tier Medium | 4, 6, 8, 10inch | 220 | 195 | 110 | 100 | 55 | 50 | 4 tier Medium | 6, 8, 9,10 inch | 280 | 240 | 140 | 120 | 70 | 60 | 4 tier Large | 6, 8, 10, 12inch | 360 | 305 | 180 | 150 | 90 | 75 | 5 tier Medium | 6, 8, 9,10 12 inch | 400 | 340 | 200 | 170 | 100 | 85 | 5 tier Medium | 4, 6, 8, 10, 12inch | 400 | 340 | 200 | 170 | 100 | 85 | 5 tier Large | 6, 8, 10, 12, 14inch | 540 | 460 | 270 | 230 | 135 | 115 | 6 tier Medium | 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 inch | 600 | 480 | 300 | 250 | 150 | 125 | 6 tier Large | 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16inch | 720 | 590 | 360 | 300 | 180 | 150 |
The pictures below give an illustration of the sizes of servings.
 | | | Small serving 1inch x 1inch by 4inch deep | Medium serving 1inch x 2inch by 4inch deep | Large serving 2inch x 2inch by 4inch deep |
The above servings are based on a square cake and for round cakes the servings are 15% less. If you have other Desserts within your food menu this will also impact the size of cake required. We recommend if you have 2 other desserts then you should use small servings as a guideline. If you have one other desert then you use Medium servings as a guideline. If you have no other desert then we recommend you follow large servings as a guideline.
The amount of servings required also depends on when and where the cake is served. If the cake is served with desert at the end of the main course then a bigger cake is required as the cake will need to be enough to be served on tables and more guests will have cake. If the cake is served at the beginning then also a bigger cake is required.
If the cake is served at the end of the main course as a buffet then you do not require a cake equal to the number of guests as not everyone will have cake, equally if the cake is served at the end with tea and coffee you do not require a big wedding cake.
In Asian weddings you will need to bear in mind that there is a lot of food and deserts as it is, not all guests will have cake, so therefore the number of servings does not need to be equivalent to the number of guests. In English weddings cake is the main desert and therefore if the desert is to be followed after the main meal you will need to follow the large desert serving as a guideline. Other factors to bear in mind is that if you have a fruit cake it will give you more servings then stated above, as the size of portion does not need to be as big. Below are some guide lines on what we recommend.
